Journalistic Integrity

I work in an industry that can be both ridiculous and sublime. In times of crisis people turn to the news to keep them informed, and let them know how to stay safe. The news also let's everyone be a part of important historic events, like the Obama inaugural, no matter how far away they may be. However, lately things have been trending more to the ridiculous. I think we all know what I am talking about. Really, the amount of coverage given to Michael Jackson's death made me believe he might rise again three days later. Of course, there are moments when the news becomes absurd due to common human error.

I don't know if it is a blessing or a curse that something as simple forgetting to use spell check can lead to public humiliation for the people involved. I mean, on one hand, it definitely makes you more careful. On the other hand, there is the public humiliation. While typos accidentally bring the wrath of the public though, dancing with a paper bear is just begging for it.

The people who put that story on the air consider themselves to be in the same profession as Edward R. Murrow and Tom Brokaw. I am thinking Murrow and Brokaw would probably disagree. Maybe not the people at Fox News though...

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have the Jackson funeral on DVR and plan to watch it until I have fully lost faith in humanity.

Cardboard or not, the bear threatdown is real! Plus, people always need an acceptable alternative to the word "shit". A well done story.....

Actually the memorial was very touching...but it is time to let it all go now.

As far as the other stories...well...sigh...

DC Diva said...

Was that a joke? Were they THAT desperate for b-roll for this story?

SERIOUSLY?????????????????

W O W! I cannot believe someone thought it was a good idea to use a cardboard cut out of a bear for the news story. Holy crap!

I'm sure all the drunks of the world rejoiced when they saw that new coverage though. They are now free and clear. I hope someone got a good "you idiot!"

As for the memorial, I caught some of it because it was literally on every damn channel. The end when the little girl broke down as she tried to speak was really hard to watch though. The rest, I didn't really pay much attention too.

Holy crap. The "recreation" of its escape and the cut-out climbing the tree were meant for SNL.

Really? They made someone move the cardboard cutout of a bear to simulate movement?

Haven't we all seen bears run before, on some generic NatGeo commercial?

So stupid.

Amy said...

LOL. That cut-out looks like something that was decided on by committee. I'll betcha that more than one person agreed gluing a paper bear to a board and running through the woods with it was a good idea just because they wanted to get out of a meeting faster.

That can NOT be real! It must be a joke.

I totally forgot to watch the funeral.

Think if I make fun of the phony black bear, PETA will get me?

Bwahhaaa! Awesome.

I'm just happy I can get back behind a wheel again! Maybe I'll bring my fake bear along with me!

Unbelievable....fake bear? Seriously?

I laughed so hard at the paper bear that my dog is alarmed at my strange behavior.

"except it was real". Who's the idiot that got to "run" along with the bear cutout? I hope they put it on his resume.

That news report was hilarous!

I almost scat myself.

Hi Libby...

Finally made the time to visit and say hello...thanks for visiting my part of the Blogosphere (and for your comments too).

That bear story cracked me up, especially the climbing the tree and making it's escape...what ridiculous lengths to go to.

Will be back again, (if that's okay)

Warmly,

Kerrie

Wow to the news crap. I think it would be ridiculously hard to work in that field and put up with idiots that consider themselves real bearers of import.

Secondly, I watched the memorial and was actually moved several times. I'm not a Jackson fan and was upset and bothered that he may have committed atrocious crimes (or may not have, such confusion) and is now being readied for Sainthood. But the memorial was done in good taste, and seeing his children mourn was very moving.
