Family Can Be Fun

I work with my Dad. I don't know if I have mentioned that before, but I probably haven't because it isn't something I like to readily bring up. I mean, the minute I say that everyone thinks I got my job through nepotism, rather than hard work and lots of sucking up. So, there's that, oh, and the fact my Dad's restraining order only allows me to mention him in my blog a limited number of times a year.

It's always interesting to watch new people try to piece together exactly what our relationship is. I've had people tell me, when looking at pictures of Meg, that Tommy (my Dad) has an adopted granddaughter as well, and maybe I should talk to him about it. I've had people ask why we go to lunch together so often. I've had people who see us outside the office together widen their eyes and do double takes, unsure if they are seeing something illicit. One time I had a new co-worker come up to me and say "did you know Tommy has a picture of you in his office?" I put on my best shocked face. "Does he have one of you too," I asked. I let her off the hook then, but for a moment it was glorious.

Last Monday the most recent hire was being shown around the newsroom, and it was my time to be introduced.
"Have you met Tommy," I asked, knowing that my Dad is his boss. "What a jerk."
"Really?" His eyes became the size of saucers. Why was I saying this? Was I disgruntled? Or crazy? Or really concerned about him?
"Oh, yeah. Stay away from him as much as you can. Nothing but bad news."

He turned and started to walk away. One of my co-workers came up and took his arm, speaking low, letting him in on the joke. He turned, looking back at me. I smiled, and waved. He shook his head, both relieved and annoyed.

I picked up the phone to call my Dad in his office to tell him the story. He groaned.

My Mom thought it was funny though.

BFFs

There are a million things I love about Meg. Her smile. Her kicking. The fact nothing makes her laugh more than the word "yuck." In the top ten though, is how much she loves my Dad.

My Dad is easy to love. He is funny, smart, willing to help out anyone, and has an absolute devotion to the worst music on the planet. However, despite all of his wonderful attributes, he has to compete with my Mom, which is not an easy feat. She won the favorite grandparent fight with Luke with no effort whatsoever. I think we all just assumed the same thing would happen with Meg, especially since she was working half-time and spending her mornings with Meg. None of us counted on the dark horse -- my Dad.

All because my Mom was offered a full-time job.

When it happened, we just assumed Meg would start going to daycare at 7:30 every morning. After all, my Dad didn't want to deal with her, did he? Then the call came.
"Lib," my Mom said.
"Hey Mom. I talked to Hazel, she's cool with Meg coming at 7."
"Lib, I don't actually take care of Meg in the morning."
"Do you drop her at Hazel's early?"
"No, your Dad watches her. And he wants to keep watching her."
My dad has now been watching her, by himself, for three weeks. They are thick as thieves. Despite the fact he is letting her watch the "Today Show," I could not be happier. I love how her face lights up when she sees him. How she smiles when she hears his voice on the phone. How he loves telling me about cleaning up diaper blow outs.

Today, my Dad turns 60. I have given him a massive amount of shit about it. I even had a pamphlet sent to him from a local old age home. However, I think he is younger than he has been in a long time, even younger than he was when I was a kid (and definitely younger than he was when I was a teenager.) And, it's all because of Meg.

I love you Dad. However, I doubt I love you as much as Meg. Happy Birthday.

Snotty Bitch

I don't know what it is. Maybe it's the cold. Maybe it's my period. Wait, no it's not my period, it hasn't been 12 weeks. Whatever it is, today I have been the bitchiest version of myself. I haven't even been mean about it, just bitchy. For instance, my Dad is the nicest guy in the world. I mean, unless you work for him and are an idiot. Luckily, I am neither, and so we get along. Today though, I was so rude.

Dad: Did you pick up mustard? (It was Luke's birthday party).
Me: No, Ryan is bringing it.
Dad: Why?
Me: He's my husband and he does what I say.

See? Rude to my Dad, and (by implication) my husband. But, I wasn't done yet. My Mom was my next victim. Now, ordinarily I would not mess with my Mom, since she is an evil genius, however, today I was not in my right mind.

Me: Do you need help with anything else?
Mom: No, I think you have done enough. Thanks.
Me: WHY ARE YOU ALWAYS CRITICIZING ME?

Wow. belligerent and channeling a 14 year old. It was a short time after this that Ryan insisted on taking me home. He put me on the couch, where I have been ever since. I have asked only for mineral water and wine, and I think I have been pretty nice.

Of course, my last bottle of mineral water was shaken up pretty good, so maybe not...
